How it Works

Family Promise is a national network program that focuses on family homelessness and other needs from underserved communities. Affiliate local groups like Family Promise of the Northland address the specific needs of the unhoused and housing insecure people in their geographic area. The national Family Promise organization provides extensive support during the creation of the local affiliate program and a wide range of ongoing services to Affiliates currently in operation. There are important components to each local Family Promise Network.

1. Service Offerings

Each affiliate program offers specific needs to assist and help those in their community. Family Promise of the Northland offers private shower settings, free laundry services, WiFi (internet café style), transportation, and a cooling/warming location during summer and winter months.

2. Day Center

Guests use a local day center by appointment. There, guests pursue employment, shower, and do laundry. The Day Center provides guests with a mailing address and a base for housing and employment searches. Many guests are employed during the day while children attend school.

3. Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of the program. They can share their time and talents in many ways, usually just for a few hours a month. Volunteer duties include, cleaning, assisting guests with laundry, light administrative work (filing & copying). But most importantly, just being there for the families, showing them compassion, respect, and a sense of community.

4. Social Services Agencies

Local social agencies refer families to the Network. The agencies may also help guests find housing, employment, and benefits.

5. Transportation

A Network van transports guests to and from the Day Center.

6. Fundraising

Since the Network is a 501 (c) 3, the organization is financed through grants, donations and fund raising.
